The Indiana Icon: The State FlagThe Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites donor societies are named to reflect the elements of our state flag.
The TORCH on the flag stands for liberty and enlightenment; the RAYS represent their far-reaching influence. The 13 STARS in a circle represent the original 13 states; the five STARS in the circle represent the next five states; the large STAR is Indiana, the 19th state.

Award recipients reflect the same devotion, enthusiasm and Hoosier pride that motivated Doris to volunteer many years assisting the museum’s fine arts curator in documenting the collection. Doris strongly believed that the museum provides enduring educational opportunities for Hoosiers.
